Deer Mountain Village Completes Forest Fire Mitigation

Press, Real Estate | July 09, 2024

Gerard Keating, Chief Executive Officer of the real estate investment firm Keating Resources, announced that the company has completed forest fire mitigation at the first phase of its 660-acre Deer Mountain Village community located in Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota. The mitigation is required by Lawrence County to reduce the spread of and destruction caused by forest fires.

Keating stated that the mitigation was completed at a cost of over $250,000, including mulching of timber debris on the ground, removal of conifer trees (ponderosa and spruce) closer than 30 feet from each other, and trimming of branches on the trunks of remaining conifers from the ground to 10 feet in height.

Keating said the community is promoting standards within Deer Mountain Village in order to obtain a Firewise USA Site of Excellence designation administered by the National Fire Protection Association and co-sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Keating said that the mitigation plan was developed by South Dakota licensed Forester Bill Colburn and implemented by Neiman, a Hulett, WY-based company.
