John Keating was honored by the American Legion Post in Atkinson, Nebraska for 70 years as an American Legion member. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in May of 1945 leaving by train a few days after his high school graduation for basic training to prepare for the invasion of Japan. The American Legion Post in Atkinson is named for John’s first cousins who were brothers and killed early in WWII. One died at the Battle of Pearl Harbor and the other in a B 17 bomber which crashed off the coast of Italy. Neither body was recovered.
