The remains of a Northeast Nebraska man are returning home.

U.S. Navy Fireman 1st Class Louis Tushla lost his life during the Pearl Harbor attacks in World War II.

On Thursday, his remains made their way across Nebraska to his final resting place. Along the route, the community of Norfolk showed their support for the young Atkinson man who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

Dozens lined the road, including members of Norfolk’s American Legion Baseball team who say showing their support is personal.

“A lot of my grandparents and uncles were all some were in the Navy some were in the Army and some were even in the Marines. So to me, it actually means quite a bit.” Jarrett Mills says

Player Sean Barrett says he’s surprised at the community’s reaction. “I love it, I love how many people showed up, I love how many people came out here to support this, and I love we’ll probably make the family really happy seeing all of us out here.” Barrett says.

Tushla’s remains will be escorted by members of the American Legion, area law enforcement, and family members until they reach Atkinson Thursday evening. There, his remains will be handed off to the Seger Funeral Home.

A funeral service with a blessing by Monsignor James Gilg will be held Saturday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church.
